Here are some of the General Principles of TPM (Taken directly from transformationprayer.org)
Emotion Are Good Even When They Feel Bad
Emotion is an expression of belief, therefore we feel whatever we believe. Emotional pain was created by God and serves a valuable purpose, and therefore, is good even though it may feel bad. It is not something that we need to avoid or suppress, but rather embrace as a trusted friend pointing out what we believe.
No One or No thing Makes Us Feel Anything that We Feel
Since we feel whatever we believe, our current situation is not the source of our emotional pain. Therefore, our situation does not dictate our emotional response; rather our emotional status in any given moment comes from how we interpret what is happening through our current beliefs. No person or thing causes us to feel anything that we feel. Therefore, blaming others, things, the devil or even God for what we feel, keeps us in an endless loop without any hope of finding freedom.
The Past is Not Our Problem but Rather Our Current Belief
We are not having difficulty because of what happened to us in the past. If our memories were the source of our pain, then there is no place for freedom since we cannot change the past. Memory does not produce any emotion in and of itself, but rather it helps us to identify how we came to believe the lies that we currently believe and why we believe that we feel what we feel. Our memories do not contain the lies we believe that are causing us our pain, nor does memory produce any measure of emotional pain itself. Our current emotional state is always because of what we currently believe and not because of what we remember.
We Believe All We Believe in Basically Two Ways; Intellectually and with Our Hearts.
Intellectual belief can easily change without much effort, however, no one, not even ourselves can talk us out of the lies we believe with our hearts other than the Holy Spirit. Only He can cause the lies to stop feeling true. It is common for us to believe the truth with our intellect while holding an opposing belief in our hearts. This is why we can believe the Bible intellectually and yet the words do not ring true to us. We can possess two or more opposing beliefs at the same time, one coming from what we intellectually believe to be true and the other from what we believe with our hearts. This is a state of being double-minded or holding two or more opposing beliefs at the same time. This is why we can quote the Bible verse that declares God will provide all our needs (intellectual belief) and yet still worry and stress over our finances (heart belief).
Getting Through Our Life Difficulties is a Given, Benefiting is Determined by Choice
Life difficulties provide us great opportunity for freedom as they surface what we believe in our hearts through the emotions that we feel. Our life difficulties and crisis are a primary means through which God exposes our lie-based beliefs and the context in which He can grant us His perspective. When the fire heats up, whatever we believe will become apparent through what we feel.Getting through a trial is not the goal set before us since we always get through every trial no matter what we may do. The passing of time usually takes care of this. However, the question remains, did we benefit? TPM provides an intentional and purposeful way for us to participate in God’s refining work and therefore, benefit from each and every difficulty.Controlling Our Behavior is Not a Fruit of the Spirit
